Only service animals are allowed on the vehicle.
Service animals are always welcome. Service animals are defined as, “Any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability, including, but not limited to, guiding individuals with impaired vision, alerting individuals with impaired hearing to intruders or sounds, providing minimal protection or rescue work, pulling a wheelchair, or fetching dropped items.”
Service animals are animals that are “individually trained to work or perform tasks.” This training can be by an organization or by an individual, including the individual with a disability. Transit agencies are not required to transport animals that have not been individually trained to perform specific work or tasks.
Our drivers may ask riders two questions:
Riders with a service animal must maintain control of their animal at all times. The driver will refuse to transport a service animal if it demonstrates disruptive behavior such as growling, being threatening, or lunging towards passengers or other animals on the vehicle.
The Norwalk Transit District operates Wheels2U using licensed and insured drivers. The software used to manage the service is provided by Via, a New York City based firm. The program is a partnership with Norwalk Transit, Norwalk Transportation, Mobility and Parking, as well as the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation as part of pledge to improve transportation in Norwalk’s urban core. The vehicles used for the service are part of the Norwalk Transit District’s paratransit fleet and Via's fleet of vehicles. NTD vehicles are funded by the Federal Administration (80%) and the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (20%). 100% of the operating expenses are supported by the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation.
